Sumatra

The 6th largest island in the world and home to more than 50 million people, Sumatra is one of the largest and most well-known coffee producing regions in Indonesia. Three major growing areas in this region are mostly located in the northern part of Sumatra: in Aceh and North Sumatra provinces.

Coffee grown in this island is known for its low acidity, full bodied and creamy with a complex flavor profile described as earthy and herbal with a hint of spice. This is due to its fertile volcanic soil and how the farmers process the coffee. Coffee in Sumatra are traditionally processed using a unique method called “Giling Basah” or wet-hulling which is only practiced in Indonesia.
